Mumbai: India are touring Sri Lanka after the final of the World Test Championship. In the series, which includes three ODIs and five T20s, India will go with the youngsters without the senior players. The likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will remain in England for the series after the Test championship final. The BCCI is planning to give a chance to all the young players ahead of the T20 World Cup..
With the absence of Kohli and Rohit, it is certain that there will be a new captain to lead India in the series. Now Deep Dasgupta has said who is the best person to lead India in both formats. He suggested Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
'If Kohli, Rohit and Rahul are not available, Shikhar Dhawan will have a chance to be the senior player in the captaincy. My feeling is that he will be. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a player who can be considered for the captaincy if he is ready to play again, ”said Dasgupta.
Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad. But neither can claim great performance as captains. Dhawan may get a chance as a senior player. Dhawan is currently unlikely to feature in India's T20 World Cup squad. Therefore, Dhawan can only make the World Cup squad if he performs well in Sri Lanka.
The tour of Sri Lanka will give youngsters like Sanju Samson, Ishant Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Thewatia, Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakraborty a chance to excel. Performance in this series is likely to be considered in the team selection for the T20 World Cup.
Deep Dasgupta said the decision not to include Bhubaneswar in the Indian squad for the World Test Championship was not a big decision. The team currently has six pacers in form. He has not played a Test for two and a half years. It has also been facing fitness issues since 2018. He added that it was difficult to get a chance in this situation.
